Suovetaurilia
Suovetaurilia: Roman sacrifice of a pig (sus), a sheep (ovis) and a bull (taurus) to a fertility deity
A suovetaurilia was a traditional Italian sacrifice consisting of a pig (sus), a sheep (ovis) and a bull (taurus) to a fertility deity, usually Mars or Mater Matuta. It was a purification sacrifice, associated with the lustrum celebrated during the Roman Republic.
The sacrifice was not limited to these deities, however, because we know that this triple sacrifice was also presented to Magusanus, as is documented in the sanctuary of Elst, where the skulls of a bull a sheep, and a pig have been excavated.
