- Numidian port; production of garum
- 40 CE: Added to the Roman Empire when Caligula annexed Numidia
- Expanded by Claudius; many veterans settled in this town
- Amphitheater, theater, nymphaeum, several churches, forum with basilica and Capitol, seaside villas
- Christian presence; martyrdom of Saint Salsa (who threw a pagan statue into the sea and was lynched)
- c.430-533/534: Vandal rule
- 533/534: Byzantine rule.
- Seventh century: Arab conquest.
