• Phoenician colony, but no remains
• Numidian port; production of garum
• 40 CE: Added to the Roman Empire when Caligula annexed Numidia
• Expanded by Claudius; many veterans settled in this town
• Amphitheater, theater, nymphaeum, several churches, forum with basilica and Capitol, seaside villas
• Christian presence; martyrdom of Saint Salsa (who threw a pagan statue into the sea and was lynched)
• c.430-533/534: Vandal rule
• 533/534: Byzantine rule.
• Seventh century: Arab conquest.
