History
- Mentioned by Ptolemy as a town; this must originally have been a Nabataean trade station; there was a source
- Existing security network of watchtowers; site was occupied in the third century
- Fort built in 303/304 by soldiers of the Sixth Legion Ferrata
- On a hill with a great view; on the western part of a fertile plain; itself on an east-facing slope
- Similar to Bethhorus/Lejjun; 4.7 hectares
- Built on foundations of basalt, with limestone ashlar mortar stones for the walls themselves
- Episcopal see in the fifth and sixth centuries; Arabized before the advance of Islam
- In Byzantine times renamed Augustopolis
