Bacchiads
Bacchiads (Greek: Βακχιάδαι): aristocratic elite of Corinth in the early Archaic Period.
The Bacchiads were the aristocratic elite, dominating Corinth in the second half of the eighth and first half of the seventh centuries BCE. Claiming descent from Heracles, they were strictly endogamousnote and kept the offices (the prytanis and polemarchos) for themselves. In this age, Corinth became a prosperous town with a great trade network in the west with colonies in Corcyra and Syracuse. In c.657 BCE, the Bacchiads were overthrown by a tyrant named Cypselus.
The rulers of Lyncestis (a barony in the west of Macedonia) claimed that the Bacchiads were their ancestors.
